Fewer than a third of Google searches now end in a click

A striking statistic has captured the attention of marketers this summer: fewer than a third of Google searches now end in a click to an external website. As AI-generated answers increasingly satisfy queries directly on the results page, the long-assumed link between search visibility and website traffic is weakening fast.
For two decades, the logic of search marketing was simple — rank highly, earn the click, win the visit. That model is now under real strain. When an AI summary answers a question in full at the top of the page, many users have no reason to click through at all, leaving even top-ranked pages starved of the traffic they once relied on.
The zero-click reality
The rise of so-called zero-click searches is not entirely new, but AI has accelerated it dramatically. Featured snippets and knowledge panels began the trend years ago; AI Overviews have supercharged it. For publishers, e-commerce sites and any business that has built its audience through organic search, the implications are serious and immediate.
It also changes what SEO is for. If fewer searches produce clicks, ranking for its own sake matters less, and being the source that AI systems cite and trust matters more. Brand mentions, authority and structured, high-quality content are becoming central to staying visible in an AI-mediated search world.
How UK brands should respond
The smart response is not to abandon search but to diversify around it. Brands should invest in owned channels they control — email lists, communities, apps and loyal direct audiences — that do not depend on a search engine sending traffic their way. At the same time, they should double down on being genuinely authoritative, because AI systems increasingly surface and cite the sources they deem most trustworthy.
Measurement matters more than ever, too. With the relationship between rankings and traffic breaking down, brands need to track visibility within AI answers, not just classic positions, and to understand the real commercial value of the traffic they still receive. The era of the guaranteed free click is ending; the brands that adapt fastest will be the ones that thrive in what comes next.
The free click that powered digital marketing for twenty years is disappearing, and no amount of nostalgia will bring it back. The brands that win from here will build audiences they own and earn the authority to be the source AI actually cites. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing
For marketers, the end of the guaranteed click means diversifying into owned channels and building the authority that gets your brand cited in AI answers.
If search sends you less traffic every year, how much of your audience do you actually own — and how exposed are you?
