Among the most far-reaching announcements from Google Marketing Live 2026 was the Universal Commerce Protocol — a proposed standard designed to make product information consistently available across AI agents such as ChatGPT and Copilot. In plain terms, it is infrastructure for a world where AI agents research, compare and buy products on a shopper's behalf. The concept, often called agentic commerce, imagines a near future in which much of the research-to-purchase journey happens inside AI systems rather than on brand websites or traditional storefronts. Rather than browsing a retailer's site, a consumer might simply ask an AI agent to find and buy the best option for their needs — and the agent would handle the rest.

A potential upheaval for retail

If agentic commerce takes hold, the implications for brands and retailers are profound. When an AI agent is doing the choosing, the classic levers of digital marketing — a slick website, a well-optimised product page, a persuasive checkout flow — may matter far less than whether a product is structured, available and trusted in the data the agent draws on. Visibility shifts from the shopfront to the underlying feed.

It also raises hard questions about brand relationships. If consumers increasingly interact with an AI intermediary rather than a brand directly, maintaining loyalty, differentiation and a distinctive identity becomes harder. Brands risk being reduced to interchangeable options in an agent's comparison unless they can give both the agent and the customer a reason to choose them specifically.

How UK brands should prepare

It is early, and standards like this take time to gain traction, but UK marketers would be wise to start preparing. That means ensuring product data is clean, structured and machine-readable, building the kind of brand strength that survives being filtered through an intermediary, and watching closely as the major AI platforms define how agentic commerce will work in practice.

The shift from human browsing to agent-led buying could be one of the most significant changes to commerce in a generation. The brands that understand it early — and adapt their data, their marketing and their thinking accordingly — will be the ones that thrive as AI agents take a seat at the checkout.

Agentic commerce could rewrite the rules of retail: when an AI agent does the choosing, your product data and your brand strength matter more than your website ever did. This feels distant, but the brands preparing now will be the ones that win the checkout of the future. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing

For marketers, agentic commerce means clean, structured product data and brand strength that survives an AI intermediary. Start preparing before it becomes mainstream.

If an AI agent were choosing products for your customers, would your brand still get picked — and why?
