Google's Q2 ad revenue jumps 14.5% as AI reshapes Search

Alphabet posted $119.8bn in Q2 2026 revenue (up 24%), with Google advertising rising 14.5% and Search up 17% — evidence that AI Overviews and AI Mode are growing search demand, not shrinking it.

The numbers: advertising is still Google's engine

On 22 July 2026, Alphabet reported second-quarter revenue of $119.8bn, up 24% year on year, comfortably beating Wall Street forecasts. Net income came in at a striking $112.1bn, flattered by investment gains, but the operating story is what matters to marketers.

Google's advertising business grew 14.5%, Search revenue rose about 17%, and YouTube pulled in $11.06bn in ad revenue, up from $9.79bn a year earlier. Google Cloud surged 82% to $24.77bn. For an 'advertising is dying' narrative, these are awkward numbers.

Why AI Search isn't cannibalising the ads

The fear across 2025 was simple: if AI Overviews answer the question, nobody clicks, and Google's ad machine seizes up. CEO Sundar Pichai's framing was the opposite — AI features are expanding the number and complexity of queries people bring to Search.

Our read: AI lowers the friction of asking, so people ask more. Longer, more specific prompts create more commercial moments — and Google is monetising those moments with AI-integrated ad formats rather than losing them. Search grew 17% while the web fretted about zero-click.

What this means for UK businesses

First, don't retreat from Search. UK advertisers tempted to cut Google budgets on 'AI will kill clicks' logic are reading the trend backwards. The click is changing shape, not disappearing.

Second, feed the machine good inputs. As Google leans harder on AI-driven formats like AI Max and Performance Max, creative assets, structured product data and clean conversion signals are the new levers. The advertiser who supplies richer inputs wins the AI auction.

Third, treat visibility inside AI answers as a KPI. Ranking is no longer just ten blue links; it's whether your brand is cited in the AI-generated response. Start tracking it now.

Quick FAQ

How much did Google's advertising revenue grow in Q2 2026?

Google advertising revenue rose about 14.5% year on year, with Search up roughly 17% and YouTube advertising reaching $11.06bn, according to Alphabet's 22 July 2026 results.

Is AI Search reducing Google ad revenue?

Not so far. Despite fears that AI Overviews would cut clicks, Google reported accelerating Search and ad growth, with Alphabet crediting AI features for expanding query volume.

What should UK advertisers change?

Keep investing in Search, supply richer creative and product data to AI-driven campaign types, and start measuring whether your brand appears in AI-generated answers.

Every quarter a founder tells me they're pulling budget out of Google because 'AI is eating search'. These results say the opposite: AI is making people search more, not less. The winners won't be the brands that flee — they'll be the ones feeding Google's AI the cleanest data and the sharpest creative.

AI didn't break Google's ad business — it supercharged it. The question for 2026 isn't whether to be in Search, but whether your data and creative are good enough to win an AI-run auction.
