Comscore Starts Measuring Sponsored Ads Inside ChatGPT

Comscore has extended its AI Intelligence suite to measure sponsored ads inside AI assistants like ChatGPT, as sponsored placements in hotel-related prompts jumped from 6% in March 2026 to 24% by May.

What Comscore launched

Comscore has expanded its AI Intelligence suite to measure sponsored advertising that appears inside AI assistants — most notably ChatGPT — and to gauge the business impact of those placements. It is the measurement industry's clearest acknowledgement yet that the answer box is becoming an ad unit.

The move responds to how quickly sponsored content is creeping into generative answers. Comscore's own data shows sponsored ads in hotel-related ChatGPT prompts rose from 6% in March 2026 to 14% in April and 24% in May. ChatGPT held roughly 69% of unique visitors in the AI-assistant category by June.

Why it matters

For two years marketers have asked the same question about AI search: how do we even know if we are showing up, let alone whether it works? Measurement has lagged the behaviour. Comscore stepping in signals that AI assistants are crossing from experiment to media channel — and that spend tends to follow measurement.

Our read: this is the "GEO" era getting its ruler. Once a currency exists for presence and impact inside AI answers, budgets shift from guesswork to planning. Expect the familiar sequence — measurement first, then benchmarks, then rate cards.

What businesses should do

Start by auditing your own category. Run the prompts a customer would actually type and note whether sponsored results appear and who is buying them — the jump from 6% to 24% in hotels shows how fast a category can tip once advertisers pile in.

Then treat AI-assistant presence as its own line in the plan, not a footnote under search. Track share of answer, not just share of search, and pressure-test any vendor's impact claims against your own conversion data. The brands that build this muscle now will set the benchmarks everyone else is later measured against.

For two years brands have flown blind in AI search. The moment measurement arrives, money follows — first you can see whether you show up, then you can plan for it. Any brand in a high-intent category should be auditing its ChatGPT presence this quarter, not next year. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing
