Reddit Opens Its AI-Powered 'Max' Campaigns to All Advertisers

Reddit has opened its AI-driven Max campaign tool — which automates targeting, creative, placements and budgets — to every advertiser, after beta users saw conversions rise more than 27% and cost per acquisition fall 17%.

What Reddit actually launched

Reddit has moved its Max campaign product out of beta and opened it to all advertisers. Max folds the moving parts of a Reddit buy — targeting, creative selection, placement and budget pacing — into a single AI-managed campaign type. The general-availability rollout adds API access, an integration with automation platform Smartly and "asset groups" that let advertisers organise multiple creative sets with separate reporting.

The product first appeared with a limited group of advertisers in January 2026. Reddit says beta participants saw an average 17% reduction in cost per acquisition and more than 27% more conversions. Those are the kind of numbers that accompany almost any automation pitch, but they land differently on a platform whose ad business has been scaling quickly and whose unique-visitor base keeps climbing.

Why it matters

Reddit is doing what every large platform now does: wrapping its ad system in AI and asking advertisers to hand over the controls in exchange for performance. Google has Performance Max, Meta has Advantage+, and Amazon and TikTok run their own equivalents. Max is Reddit's entry into that club, and it signals the platform believes it finally has the data density to let a model optimise on advertisers' behalf.

Our read: the real story here is less about Reddit's algorithm and more about Reddit's confidence. Opening automation to everyone only works when a platform trusts its own signal. For advertisers, though, "hand us the controls" always carries a cost — less visibility into where spend goes and which communities it lands in. On Reddit specifically, where subreddit context makes or breaks a campaign, that trade-off deserves real scrutiny.

What businesses should do

Treat Max as a test, not a wholesale replacement. Ring-fence a portion of your Reddit budget — 20% to 30% is a sensible starting split — and run Max against a manually structured campaign for at least one full purchase cycle before shifting more. Watch not only CPA but where impressions actually appear; automation can chase cheap conversions into communities that do not fit your brand.

Use the new asset groups deliberately. Feed the model distinct creative sets per audience or message rather than one generic pool, and keep the reporting separated so you can see which angle the AI is really rewarding. And if you run through Smartly or the API, that integration is the point — plug Max into the same measurement discipline you apply everywhere else, rather than judging it on Reddit's in-platform numbers alone.

Quick FAQ

What is Reddit Max?

Max is Reddit's AI-powered campaign type that automates targeting, creative selection, placements and budget pacing in a single managed campaign. It is now available to all advertisers after a beta that began in January 2026.

How well did Max perform in beta?

Reddit says beta advertisers saw an average 17% drop in cost per acquisition and more than 27% more conversions, though results vary by category, creative and objective.

Should small businesses use Reddit Max?

It lowers the barrier to running Reddit ads, but test it against a manual campaign and monitor placement quality before committing the bulk of your budget.

Every platform is racing to sell automation, and Reddit opening Max to everyone tells you it finally trusts its own data. But 'let the AI decide' is never free — on Reddit, where the right community is everything, marketers should test hard and watch exactly where their money lands. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing

Automation lowers the effort of running Reddit ads, but raises the stakes on measurement — the brands that win with Max will be the ones that still know where every impression went.

Are you ready to let AI run your Reddit campaigns end to end — or do you still want your hands on the targeting?
