Stagwell Names Liz Rutgersson Global CEO of Assembly

Stagwell has named Liz Rutgersson — a 16-year Dentsu veteran and former CEO of iProspect North America — as global CEO of its flagship media agency Assembly, while Connie Chan becomes CEO of Assembly APAC, signalling a fresh push for global scale and consistency.

A double leadership move at Stagwell's media flagship

On 15 September, Stagwell confirmed Liz Rutgersson as CEO of Assembly, its flagship media agency, overseeing global operations and North America. She reports to Slavi Samardzija, Stagwell's global chair of media and commerce. Rutgersson succeeds Rick Acampora, who moves to build Tradewell Solutions, a new corporate trade and barter business inside Stagwell.

In the same announcement, Connie Chan was named CEO of Assembly APAC, effective immediately, while keeping her role as chief growth officer of Stagwell APAC. Together the appointments give Assembly clearer leadership across its two biggest growth theatres.

Who is Liz Rutgersson?

Rutgersson brings 16 years at Dentsu, most recently three years as CEO of iProspect North America. Her client experience spans Hilton, eBay, Salesforce, Ferrero, Dollar General and Tesco — a spread of retail, tech and travel names that maps neatly onto Assembly's ambitions in performance and commerce media.

Poaching a senior operator from a rival holding company is itself a statement. Stagwell, the challenger group built by Mark Penn, has consistently positioned itself as the nimble alternative to the mega-holdcos, and hiring from Dentsu's leadership bench reinforces that.

Marketing Minute's read: the challenger networks are professionalising

This is less about one hire and more about a pattern. Challenger networks that grew fast by acquisition are now installing seasoned holdco executives to bring operational discipline, global consistency and enterprise-grade client servicing. That is exactly what large advertisers demand before they hand over multi-market media budgets.

The move also sharpens the commerce and retail-media angle. With a leader steeped in performance and a new trade-and-barter unit alongside, Stagwell is clearly betting that the next wave of media growth is measurable, commerce-led and increasingly automated.

What businesses should do now

If Assembly is on your roster or your pitch list, expect a renewed focus on global consistency, performance measurement and retail media. Use the leadership change as a natural checkpoint: ask for a refreshed scope, clarity on who owns your account globally versus regionally, and evidence of how the network's data and commerce capabilities translate into incremental sales.

For everyone else, treat this as a signal of where media agencies are heading. The differentiator is no longer buying clout alone but joined-up, accountable performance across markets — and the talent war to lead it has clearly moved up a gear.
