BBDO's Andrew Robertson Takes Over Omnicom Advertising as Troy Ruhanen Retires

Omnicom has named BBDO chairman Andrew Robertson CEO of its combined Omnicom Advertising division, effective immediately, as founding chief Troy Ruhanen retires after two decades.

The leadership change

Omnicom has appointed Andrew Robertson, chairman of BBDO Worldwide, as CEO of Omnicom Advertising, effective immediately. He succeeds Troy Ruhanen, who is retiring as president and CEO of the division after more than 20 years at the group, including a spell running TBWA\Worldwide. Robertson joined BBDO in 1995 and has led it for much of his career.

Omnicom Advertising unifies the creative networks of BBDO, DDB, TBWA and the Advertising Collective — a structure formed in late 2025. Ruhanen said he and Omnicom CEO John Wren had planned his exit "for some time" but extended the timeline after the IPG acquisition and the division's formation. Wren credited Ruhanen with "bringing together our combined organization."

Why the timing matters

Read between the lines and this is a signal that Omnicom considers its IPG integration largely done — stable enough to hand a founding leader's role to a proven operator and shift the emphasis from merging to growing. You don't change the driver mid-crisis; you change when you want to accelerate.

Our read: for the biggest holding company on earth after the IPG deal, the message to clients is that the plumbing is built and now it is time to sell. Robertson's BBDO pedigree — a creative-network leader, not a finance or operations figure — hints at where Omnicom wants the next phase of the story told.

What clients and talent should do

If you are a client inside BBDO, DDB or TBWA, press for clarity now on what "one creative organisation" means for your specific service team, staffing and pitch approach. Leadership transitions are exactly when accountabilities blur; get yours renewed in writing.

If you are in an active review, use the moment as leverage: ask Omnicom directly how the new structure changes who works on your business and how creative and media integrate post-IPG. And for agency talent, expect a period of role clarification — the reorganisation that follows a merger is usually where careers are quietly reshaped.

Quick FAQ

Who is replacing Troy Ruhanen at Omnicom Advertising?

Andrew Robertson, chairman of BBDO Worldwide, effective immediately, as Ruhanen retires after more than 20 years at Omnicom.

What is Omnicom Advertising?

A division formed in late 2025 that unifies Omnicom's creative networks — BBDO, DDB, TBWA and the Advertising Collective.

Why does the change matter?

It signals Omnicom sees its IPG integration as largely complete and is pivoting from merging to growth under a proven creative-network leader.

You hand a founding leader's chair to a proven operator when you're done building and ready to sell. This looks less like turbulence and more like Omnicom declaring the hard IPG-integration work over. If you're a client, that's your cue to renew — in writing — exactly who is accountable for your business. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing

A holding-company leadership change is a client-action trigger, not a spectator sport — renew who's accountable for your account before the reorg blurs it.

If your agency's holding company reshuffled its leadership tomorrow, would you know who actually owns your business?
