Google Opens SynthID to Let Anyone Spot AI Content

Google has opened its SynthID Detector to the public, letting anyone check whether images and other media were generated by AI, and extending detection beyond Google's own models to content made with other tools.

What Google did

SynthID is Google's system for invisibly watermarking AI-generated content and then detecting that watermark. Google has now opened the SynthID Detector more widely, so people can check whether a piece of media carries the watermark.

Crucially, coverage is expanding beyond Google's own Gemini models toward content created with other AI tools, a step toward an industry-wide way to flag synthetic media.

Why AI provenance matters for brands

As AI floods feeds with synthetic images and video, trust and authenticity are under real pressure. Regulators, including US states moving to mandate AI disclosure in advertising, and platforms increasingly want provenance signals.

For brands, being able to prove what is real and clearly label what is AI is shifting from a nice-to-have to table stakes, both for compliance and for credibility.

The Marketing Minute read

Content authenticity is the next brand-safety frontier. The brands that handle it well will be the ones that treat transparency as an asset rather than an admission.

Our take: build provenance into your creative pipeline now. Watermark and label AI-made assets, keep an audit trail, and be open about where AI is used. The brands that are upfront will be trusted more than the ones caught hiding it.

AI-content disclosure and provenance are becoming regulatory and trust expectations, so being able to verify and label AI assets matters.

Content authenticity is the next brand-safety frontier. As feeds fill with synthetic media, the brands that watermark and label their AI work will be trusted more than the ones caught hiding it. Build provenance into your creative pipeline now, because transparency about AI is a trust-builder, not a confession. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing

As AI-made content floods every feed, provenance becomes table stakes: brands that watermark, label and keep an audit trail of their AI assets will own the trust advantage over those who stay vague about what is real.

If a customer asked which of your ads were made with AI, could you answer honestly, and would you want to?
