Academy Sports launches its own retail media network

On 30 July 2026 Academy Sports + Outdoors launched Academy Retail Media (ARM), a full retail media network offering onsite, in-app and off-site ads with closed-loop measurement across 52 million verified customers — the latest US retailer to turn shopper data into an ad business.

A sporting-goods retailer joins the retail-media rush

Academy Sports + Outdoors, the Texas-based sporting-goods chain, has launched Academy Retail Media (ARM), giving brand partners onsite, in-app and off-site advertising with closed-loop measurement. ARM lets advertisers track same-SKU sales, brand halo and return on ad spend across a base of 52 million verified customers spanning 320+ stores in 21 states.

The launch is another sign that retail media is no longer just a grocery-and-Amazon story. Category specialists — sporting goods, DIY, beauty, pharmacy — are realising their first-party purchase data is a sellable, high-margin asset.

Why specialist retailers have an edge

Academy's shoppers are in-market for defined, high-consideration categories — fitness, hunting, outdoor and team sports. That context is gold for endemic brands that want to reach a buyer who is demonstrably in the category, not a general audience.

Closed-loop measurement is the real hook. Tying an ad impression to a same-SKU purchase is the metric brands actually want, and it is what separates a credible network from a glorified banner sale.

Marketing Minute's read: the long tail of retail media is arriving

Our take: 2026 is the year retail media stops being a grocery-and-Amazon story. Every retailer with a loyalty file and a login is now a potential media owner, and the specialists often have sharper context than the supermarkets.

For brands, the risk is fragmentation — a dozen new networks each with its own login, rules and measurement. The action point: prioritise networks by data quality and closed-loop proof, run controlled tests, and demand incrementality, not just attributed ROAS.

Quick FAQ

What is Academy Retail Media?

The new in-house ad network from Academy Sports + Outdoors, launched 30 July 2026, offering onsite, in-app and off-site ads with closed-loop, same-SKU measurement across 52 million verified customers.

Why are specialist retailers launching retail media networks?

Their first-party purchase data identifies shoppers in-market for specific high-consideration categories, which is valuable to endemic brands — and ad margins far exceed retail margins.

What should advertisers watch for?

Data quality and true incrementality. Back networks that prove same-SKU lift, not just attributed ROAS, and avoid spreading budget thinly across every new network.

Retail media's next wave is the specialists: category retailers like Academy have sharper shopper context than the supermarkets — but brands should back the networks that prove incremental sales, not just attributed ROAS.

How many retail-media networks is your brand now being pitched — and how do you decide which ones are worth a test?
