Online shopping reached 29.4% of all UK retail spending in June 2026 — the highest share since April 2021 — as online spending values jumped 14.4% year on year and overall retail volumes rose 4.2%.
What the ONS reported
The Office for National Statistics says online sales made up 29.4% of all retail spending in June 2026, the highest proportion since April 2021. Online spending values were up 14.4% year on year, and non-store retailers grew 4.4% month on month.
The wider picture was strong too. Overall retail sales volumes rose 1.0% on the month and 4.2% year on year, helped by the heatwave, promotional activity and the FIFA World Cup, with clothing and footwear up 1.9% — the biggest monthly jump since September 2025.
E-commerce is re-accelerating
This matters because online's share had been stuck around 26–27% for years after the pandemic surge unwound. A move back to 29.4% suggests e-commerce is genuinely re-accelerating rather than simply recovering, and that the online channel is taking a bigger slice of a growing pie.
The counterpoint is the high street. Footfall has continued to slide, down around 6.2% year on year, so the marginal pound is increasingly being spent on a screen. That does not mean stores are finished — but it does mean the growth is disproportionately digital.
What UK businesses should do
Our read: don't declare the store dead, but do follow the marginal pound. If nearly a third of spending is now online and that share is rising, digital commerce deserves a larger slice of both media and merchandising investment than many mid-market brands currently give it.
Practically, that means investing in retail media where your shoppers actually browse, keeping product feeds clean and complete, getting discovery-ready for AI shopping assistants, and ruthlessly removing friction from mobile checkout. The brands that win the next year will be the ones that make buying online effortless.

Nearly a third of UK retail spending is now online and rising — follow the marginal pound with your media and merchandising, not last year's channel split.
Does your budget split match where your customers now actually spend — or is it still modelled on a 26% online world?
