Lufthansa Wants to Sell Advertisers Your Whole Trip, Not Just the Seat

Lufthansa Group has launched a group-wide media business, Lufthansa Group Media, turning its airlines, lounges, airports and onboard Wi-Fi into a single ad network reaching more than 130 million travellers across 72-plus touchpoints.

An airline becomes a media owner

Lufthansa Group has launched Lufthansa Group Media, a group-wide media and retail-media business that pitches advertisers reach to more than 130 million travellers across 72-plus touchpoints — from inspiration and booking to the airport, lounge, flight and post-trip.

The launch carriers are Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines, with more group airlines to follow. It is one of the clearest signs yet that the retail-media land grab has moved well beyond supermarkets and e-commerce.

Why everyone is building a media network

Retail media works because it sits on first-party data and captive attention. Airlines have both in abundance: they know who you are, where you're going and why, and they have you sitting still — sometimes for hours — with a screen in front of you.

New 2027 inventory includes premium lounge screens (up to 10 at New York JFK, up to seven at Washington Dulles), onboard digital via new group Wi-Fi, and 'Data Activation' audience targeting built from interest and search behaviour. A related plan targets Wi-Fi ads on around 850 aircraft by 2029.

The travel-media gold rush

Lufthansa isn't alone — airlines and travel brands worldwide are racing to monetise their audiences. As Marcus Frank, Head of Loyalty at Lufthansa Group, put it, the platform 'brings together the different moments of a trip into one connected media ecosystem'.

For advertisers, the appeal is a high-value, hard-to-reach audience in a premium context. The risk, as with all retail media, is cluttering the customer experience — nobody wants a holiday turned into an ad break.

What businesses should take from it

The broader lesson is that any business with an engaged audience and first-party data may be sitting on a media asset. If customers spend time with you — in a venue, an app, a waiting area — that attention has value you might be giving away.

Marketing Minute's take: retail media is no longer a retail story, it's an attention story. Before you build your own network, though, remember the trade-off: every ad you sell against your audience spends a little of the goodwill that made them worth advertising to.

Airlines have what every advertiser wants: first-party data and a captive, premium audience. Turning that into a media network is smart. But the warning applies to everyone chasing retail media — every ad you sell spends a little of the goodwill that made the audience valuable in the first place. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing
