Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012) is no longer the consumer of tomorrow they're shaping the retail industry today. With their global purchasing power expected to reach $12 trillion within the next five years, Gen Z is redefining where people shop, how they shop and what they expect from brands.
For retailers, understanding this generation is no longer optional. It's essential.
1. Physical stores aren't disappearing,they're evolving
Despite growing up in a digital-first world, 51% of Gen Z consumers still prefer shopping in physical stores rather than purchasing online straight away. However, they expect much more than shelves filled with products. They want stores that offer memorable experiences, inspiring environments and a sense of community.Store design matters too. Around 34% of Gen Z shoppers value a store's aesthetics, while 29% are more likely to visit retailers that host in-store events and interactive experiences.
2. They're becoming more considered shoppers
The stereotype that Gen Z shops impulsively is becoming outdated. Around half leave products in their online basket for two days or more before making a purchase. They're increasingly focused on value for money rather than brand loyalty, with 61% saying they have switched brands because of rising prices.Today's younger consumers are researching more, comparing more and thinking carefully before they buy.
3. Social media has become the new high street
For Generation Z, platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest are far more than social media they're where shopping journeys begin.Around 60% of Gen Z TikTok users access the platform every day, while 66% of weekly Pinterest users use it to discover products and shopping inspiration. Instead of searching on Google, many consumers now discover brands through creators, short-form videos and personalised content.
4. AI is transforming every stage of the shopping journey
Generation Z is leading the adoption of Artificial Intelligence in retail. Around 28% already use generative AI to research products, compare prices and receive personalised recommendations. They're also embracing AI-powered
search experiences, making purchasing decisions faster and more informed than ever before.
5. Sustainability is an expectation, not a trend
For Generation Z, sustainability is no longer a bonus it's an expectation.Platforms such as Vinted and Depop continue to grow in popularity as more consumers choose second-hand shopping, combining affordability with environmental responsibility. They're looking for brands that align with their values, not just their budgets.
6. "Dupes" are redefining brand loyalty
Affordable alternatives, commonly known as "dupes", are becoming increasingly popular among younger shoppers.
Rather than paying premium prices for well-known brands, many consumers are choosing products that offer similar quality at a lower cost. This trend is creating new opportunities for private labels and emerging brands, while forcing established names to rethink how they deliver value.
Generation Z isn't simply adapting to the future of retail they're defining it.
From physical stores and social commerce to AI-powered shopping and sustainability, their expectations are reshaping every aspect of the retail experience. Brands that understand these changing behaviours will be far better positioned to build lasting relationships with the next generation of consumers.
