Five Guys Names Mirimar as Its First Creative AOR, Ending the Word-of-Mouth Era

Five Guys has appointed LA agency Mirimar as its creative agency of record — cementing a more deliberate marketing push after decades of relying almost entirely on word of mouth.

The appointment

Five Guys has named LA-based Mirimar its creative agency of record after a competitive pitch. It comes less than a month after the chain appointed Canvas Worldwide as its media agency, and follows its first national campaign, "Your Burger Guy," run earlier in 2026 via Chemistry. Mirimar also serves as AOR for Rocket and Priceline.

Chief commercial officer Navin Sharma framed the philosophy neatly: "We've never cut corners on ingredients, and we're not cutting corners on who tells our story." In other words, a brand that grew on cult loyalty is now building a proper agency roster.

Why even beloved brands hit a ceiling

Five Guys is a case study in the limits of word of mouth. Organic love is a phenomenal foundation — it built the brand — but it does not scale on command, defend against better-funded rivals, or reach people who are not already in the fold. At some point, growth requires paid storytelling.

Our read: standing up a full creative-plus-media roster inside a single year is the tell. This is not a one-off campaign; it is infrastructure. Five Guys is industrialising a marketing capability it previously did not need — and that is what "the first real marketing chapter" looks like.

What founder-led and organic brands should note

First, build the marketing infrastructure before growth stalls, not after. The brands that struggle are the ones that wait until word of mouth plateaus to start figuring out creative and media; by then they are playing catch-up against competitors who have been buying attention for years.

Second, protect the equity that word of mouth built. The risk in going big is losing the specificity and authenticity that made people evangelists. Sharma's "don't cut corners on who tells our story" is the right instinct: scale the storytelling, but keep it recognisably yours.

What's the lesson for other brands?

Build creative-and-media infrastructure before organic growth stalls, and protect the authenticity that word of mouth created.

Word of mouth is a brilliant foundation and a terrible growth plan on its own — it can't scale on command or fend off better-funded rivals. Five Guys standing up a full creative and media roster in a single year is what maturity looks like. The trick now is to scale the storytelling without sanding off what made people love it. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing

Word of mouth builds brands but doesn't scale them — put creative and media infrastructure in place before organic growth plateaus, not after.

If your brand's word-of-mouth engine stalled next quarter, is the paid storytelling infrastructure already in place to keep growing?
