Behr's AI 'ChatHue' Turns 'Paint Paralysis' Into a Marketing Advantage

Behr is treating consumer indecision as a marketing problem to solve. Research it commissioned found 40% of people abandon paint projects because they can't choose a colour, so it built ChatHue — an AI colour agent made with Google Cloud — plus a colour-first website and an influencer hotline to nudge shoppers past 'paint paralysis'.

The insight: colour choice is where projects die

Behr's marketing rests on a single, sharp consumer truth. Research the brand commissioned found that 40% of people rank colour selection as the hardest step of a painting project — and, tellingly, 40% abandon projects altogether because they can't decide. CMO Andy Lopez has a name for it: 'paint paralysis'.

It's a smart reframing. Instead of shouting about finish quality or price, Behr identified the exact point where a would-be customer freezes and walks away — and made removing that friction the entire marketing strategy.

The AI fix: ChatHue

The centrepiece is ChatHue, an AI colour agent Behr built with Google Cloud using Gemini, Vertex AI, BigQuery and Cloud Run, layered over the brand's proprietary colour data. It launched in July 2025 and offers personalised colour recommendations to shoppers who don't know where to start.

In March 2026 Behr added colour-visualisation features — letting people preview shades in context — and reported a 15% lift in customer satisfaction as a result. That satisfaction number matters more than any vanity metric: it's evidence the tool is actually reducing the anxiety it was built to solve.

Not a bot in isolation: a confidence funnel

ChatHue doesn't work alone. This spring Behr ran a nostalgic 'hotline' influencer campaign with five major real-estate and DIY creators; the lead Instagram video drew more than 13,000 likes and prompted over 3,400 calls to the helpline — turning a gimmick into genuine hand-raising demand.

Behr also rebuilt its website into a 'colour destination' organised around consumer confidence, then routed e-commerce shoppers to The Home Depot to buy. Every touchpoint pushes the same job: get the customer past the colour decision and into the project.

What marketers should take from it

The framework is worth copying. Find the single decision that kills your conversion, then aim your tools, content and AI squarely at that moment. Behr didn't deploy AI because it was fashionable; it deployed it at the precise bottleneck where customers gave up.

The second lesson is measurement. A '+15% satisfaction' result is the kind of metric that proves a marketing tool is doing real work. If your AI initiative can't point to a friction it removed or a number it moved, it's probably theatre.
