Galeria Files for Its Fourth Insolvency in Six Years as Autumn Sales Collapse
Updated: 6 days ago

TL;DR: Germany's last nationwide department-store chain, Galeria, has filed for insolvency for the fourth time since 2020 after a steep collapse in summer and autumn sales.
A fourth collapse in six years
On 2 October 2026, Galeria filed for self-administration (Eigenverwaltung) at the Düsseldorf district court — its fourth insolvency since 2020. The process lets the company restructure while existing management stays in control.
For now, the roughly 83 stores remain open and around 12,000 staff keep working. That continuity matters commercially: suppliers, concession partners and landlords are all watching whether Germany's last nationwide department-store chain can trade its way through yet another process, or whether this one proves terminal.
How a profitable year unravelled so fast
The trigger was a sudden sales collapse. Revenue fell around 15% year on year across June, July and August, then dropped roughly 25% in September — even after Galeria secured a €160m credit facility in late June.
The reversal is stark because 2025 looked like a genuine turnaround. The 83 stores turned over more than €2bn and posted their first operating profit in over a decade. Yet before the filing, 33 of the 83 stores were already under viability review.
A single strong year, in other words, did not translate into momentum. When autumn footfall softened, the cushion disappeared almost immediately.
The structural gap behind the headlines
Retail professor Carsten Kortum told HORIZONT that Galeria is unlikely to recover, arguing a retailer "cannot restructure customer demand into existence." The weakness he points to is structural: a thin e-commerce proposition against Amazon, Zalando and Otto.
Marketing Minute's read: profitability for one year is a result, not a moat. Galeria fixed its cost base faster than it fixed the reason shoppers increasingly go elsewhere. Department stores sell breadth and discovery — exactly the jobs online marketplaces now do cheaper and faster.
A useful frame is to separate a "cost turnaround" from a "demand turnaround." Galeria achieved the first; the second never arrived, and that is the gap that keeps pulling it back into insolvency.
What marketers and retail partners should do now
For brands, concession operators and retail-media buyers, treat budgets tied to Galeria footfall as at risk. Audit that exposure now, and build a contingency for possible store closures into the next planning cycle.
Shift incremental spend toward online pure-plays and retail-media networks with first-party data and stable traffic. Where department-store placements still make sense, negotiate shorter commitments and performance-linked terms rather than fixed annual deals.
The wider lesson for any bricks-and-mortar brand: a good quarter buys time to rebuild demand, not permission to stop trying.
Quick FAQ
How many times has Galeria been insolvent?
Four times since 2020. The latest filing, on 2 October 2026, is a self-administration process at the Düsseldorf district court.
Are Galeria stores closing?
The roughly 83 stores remain open for now and around 12,000 staff continue working, but 33 stores were under viability review before the filing, so closures are possible.
Why did Galeria fail again after a profitable 2025?
Sales fell sharply — about 15% over the summer and 25% in September — and analysts point to a structurally weak e-commerce offer against Amazon, Zalando and Otto.
I keep coming back to one line from this story: you cannot restructure demand into existence. Galeria proved it can cut costs and post a profit, but a department store lives or dies on why people walk in. Fix the reason to visit first, and the numbers follow. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing
If your brand leans on department-store footfall, stress-test that exposure now and move incremental spend toward channels that still own customer demand.
Is your 2027 retail plan built around locations that own customer demand, or ones that merely used to?
