ESPN and United Drafted Fantasy Football at 35,000 Feet
TL;DR: For the first time, ESPN's televised fantasy football draft included live picks made at 35,000 feet aboard a Starlink-equipped United flight — a stunt built with Disney Advertising that United is turning into an ad for its in-flight connectivity.
What actually happened
On 25 August, ESPN's fantasy football draft special aired live from two places at once: its Bristol studio and the cabin of a United aircraft cruising at 35,000 feet. Host Tyler Fulghum drafted mid-flight while analysts Field Yates, Mike Clay and Liz Loza picked from the studio.
The two-hour special ran on ESPN and the NFL on ESPN YouTube channel. The connective tissue was Starlink Wi-Fi, which let a real fantasy draft happen in the air without lag or dropped picks.
United is now cutting a commercial from the stunt to showcase its in-flight connectivity, which the airline says runs on more than 500 mainline and regional aircraft and is free for MileagePlus members.
Why United built the stunt, not just an ad
United's chief advertising officer put the insight plainly: 'Until now, being in the air could mean handing over your picks to auto-draft.' That is a real, specific pain that frequent-flyer fantasy players feel every August.
Rather than claim 'fast Wi-Fi' in a 30-second spot, United dramatised the claim by doing the single hardest thing that Wi-Fi enables — a live, latency-sensitive broadcast — in front of ESPN's audience.
The demonstration is the message. A stunt that proves the product is far more persuasive than an adjective describing it.
Marketing Minute's read
This is a textbook 'proof over promise' play, and it works because three parties each get something. ESPN gets a novel, talked-about format; United gets a credibility-building demo; Disney Advertising gets a template it can resell to other brands.
The deeper principle: find the moment where your product does something rivals can only claim, then stage that moment publicly. Starlink turned a feature spec into a spectacle.
Crucially, the content is inherently shareable — 'they drafted fantasy football on a plane' is a story people repeat, which earns reach paid media has to buy.
What businesses should do
Identify your product's most demonstrable truth — the thing you can prove live rather than merely assert. That is your best creative brief.
Then partner where the demonstration is native. United didn't invent an audience; it borrowed ESPN's fantasy moment, where the product benefit is felt most acutely.
Finally, design the stunt to produce content, not just a headline. The commercial United is cutting means the moment keeps working long after the broadcast ends.
Quick FAQ
What did ESPN and United do?
They staged part of ESPN's live televised fantasy football draft at 35,000 feet aboard a United aircraft on 25 August, using Starlink Wi-Fi so picks happened in real time.
How many United aircraft have Starlink Wi-Fi?
United says Starlink now runs on more than 500 mainline and regional aircraft, and it is free for MileagePlus members.
Why is this good marketing?
It proves a product claim through a live demonstration rather than asserting it, and produces shareable content United is turning into a commercial.
United didn't tell us its Wi-Fi is fast — it drafted a live fantasy team at 35,000 feet on national television. That's the difference between a promise and a proof. The brands that break through now are the ones brave enough to stage the demonstration instead of scripting the claim. — Daniel Nikolla, Founder of Merx Marketing
The real win isn't the novelty — it's United turning a hard-to-believe product claim into a public, shareable demonstration that keeps selling long after the broadcast.
