Cava Hires Dr. Squatch's John Ludeke as CMO to Fuel Its Next Growth Phase

Cava has appointed John Ludeke, former chief brand officer at Dr. Squatch, as chief marketing officer from 12 October — reaching outside the restaurant sector for a consumer-brand marketer to keep its double-digit growth going.

A consumer-brand marketer, not a restaurant lifer

Fast-casual Mediterranean chain Cava has named John Ludeke as its new chief marketing officer, effective 12 October 2026. He arrives from men's personal-care disruptor Dr. Squatch, where he was chief brand officer, and succeeds Andrew Rebhun, who left in August 2026.

The choice is deliberate. Rather than hire another restaurant-industry executive, Cava has gone for someone who built cultural heat around a challenger consumer brand. CEO Brett Schulman praised Ludeke's 'ability to quickly understand the essence of a consumer brand and translate it into a meaningful marketing strategy that is relevant, distinctive, and true to the brand.'

Growth that marketing barely paid for

Cava doesn't need rescuing — it needs scaling. In Q2 2026 the chain posted same-restaurant sales up 9% and guest traffic up 5.3%, a standout in a cautious US dining market. Strikingly, it did that while spending just over 1% of revenue on marketing.

That low spend ratio is the whole story. Cava has grown on product, word of mouth and real estate. A dedicated brand-builder like Ludeke is being brought in to turn a strong operational brand into a loved one — and to do it before the easy growth runs out.

Marketing Minute's read: hire for the next S-curve, not the last one

This is a smart, counter-intuitive appointment. Brands that grow on traffic and product often plateau when geographic expansion slows; the next S-curve has to come from brand affinity and frequency. Importing DTC-style brand thinking is how you build that before you need it.

The lesson for growing businesses: your next marketing leader should match your next phase, not your last one. When marketing is only 1% of revenue and sales are up 9%, the opportunity isn't to defend — it's to invest into a brand that can carry the company through its slower years.

Hiring a DTC brand-builder when you're growing 9% on a 1% marketing budget is exactly the right time to do it. The worst moment to start building a brand is when you finally need one. The best time to hire a brand-builder is while you're still growing on product — not when the growth stalls and you suddenly wish you had one.

Is your next marketing hire built for the phase you're in now, or the phase you're about to enter?
